Studio Assistant – About Miss Purl

Miss Purl is a creative fiber arts hub on the South Side of Chicago, offering classes, kits, and community experiences that help people reclaim their leisure time, replenish their creativity, and reconnect with themselves and others. She is looking for a delightful Studio Assistant to help her deliver joyful, intentional experiences to every maker who walks through our doors.

Studio Assistant – Nurtures our Brick and Mortar home.

The Studio Assistant nurtures the heartbeat of Miss Purl’s studio space. This role blends customer service, hospitality, and administrative support to help Miss Purl meet its monthly revenue goals and maintain a nurturing, creative atmosphere.

You’ll welcome guests, support sales, offer yarn guidance, and help with studio operations. You’ll also learn to operate our Point of Sale (POS) system to check out customers and manage transactions.

Key Responsibilities

Retail Space Stewardship

  • Maintain a welcoming, clean, and creatively inspiring studio atmosphere

  • Assist with the set-up of seasonal displays

  • Refresh merchandising to reflect current kits, classes, and themes

  • Assist with the organization of shelves and bins to keep products accessible and visually appealing

  • Monitor in-store shopping patterns and share insights on high-demand items

Customer Experience & Yarn Guidance

  • Provide warm, knowledgeable customer service

  • Offer yarn and project suggestions based on fiber content, skill level, and pattern needs

  • Help customers match yarns to patterns and understand in-store substitutions

  • Stay familiar with Miss Purl’s current kits, featured yarns, and upcoming classes

Studio Operations

  • Learn and operate our POS system to check out customers and manage transactions

  • Make in-store swatches of featured yarns to support customer decision-making

  • Help pack kits and prepare materials for workshops and events

Qualifications

  • Confident and practicing fiber hobbyist (knit or crochet) with curiosity about yarn types and project suitability

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills

  • Comfortable learning new systems (POS, inventory tools)

  • Detail-oriented and organized

  • Passion for creative community and fiber arts

  • Fearless and proactive: This role involves talking to people, listening deeply, supporting customers, and requires a lot of patience

  • Understanding of sales and willingness to engage in sales conversations and learn sales techniques

  • Applicants must be available to work
    one Saturday (9:30 AM–3:15 PM) and
    one Sunday (11:30 AM–6:15 PM) per month. These shifts are not back-to-back and will be scheduled separately to support balance and flexibility.

Bonus Skills (Not Required but Awesome)

  • Professional hospitality or retail experience

  • Bilingual (Spanish) or multilingual

  • Familiarity with the South Side of Chicago and its creative community

  • Interest in wellness, mindfulness, and creative self-care

  • Desire to grow with a small business and wear multiple hats
